US bonds are the biggest, baddest, most beloved financial asset on the planet. But for the past few months, they’ve been flashing red and scaring pretty much everybody. What’s going on? This week on Everybody’s Business from Bloomberg Businessweek, hosts Stacey Vanek Smith and Max Chafkin take a deep dive into the world of bonds with the expert guidance of David Papadopoulos, an executive editor at Bloomberg News. US bonds were thriving for a long time in spite of mounting debt, trade wars, debt-ceiling battles, political divisions and the like because they still looked like the best investment. But now there’s a new investment in town: robots. Alphabet, Amazon.com, Apple, Nvidia and other giant tech companies are borrowing billions of dollars to build data centers and other infrastructure for the AI revolution. To do this, they’re issuing hundreds of billions of dollars worth of bonds. Corporate bonds have always existed, but they never came close to matching the size, scope and perceived safety of a US government bond. But these days, several tech companies have country-size revenue and are decidedly global in their reach. And that’s changed the game. Next up on the podcast, Businessweek senior contributing writer Evan Ratliff joins to talk about his recent article on AI crime and how the legal system is grappling with who to blame when robots go rogue. As it turns out, jurists in 14th century France had something in common. Listen and subscribe on Apple, Spotify, iHeart and the Bloomberg Terminal. More Weekend Reads
