Books like Rise and Grind, #Girlboss and Lean In were bestsellers. Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk and their Silicon Valley peers were more likely to be copied than ridiculed. Unfortunately for those who occupy the top jobs at companies, those days are over. A significant shift in sentiment, coinciding with rising levels of distrust in institutions of all kinds, has come for the corner office. As Bloomberg Opinion columnist Beth Kowitt explains on this week’s episode of Everybody’s Business, the job of running a company has never been tougher. CEOs increasingly complain they are overworked, overstressed and subjected to endless scrutiny — to such an extent that management experts warn the economy will suffer as companies struggle to attract qualified candidates. To be sure, summoning sympathy for bosses is a tall order, especially given historically high levels of corporate profits, their giant paychecks and the endless messaging about how artificial intelligence will replace those toiling below. All of which combine for another reason being a CEO stinks these days: Nobody likes you. Also this week, host Max Chafkin and Bloomberg Businessweek Editor Brad Stone are joined by Bloomberg News healthcare reporter Madison Muller to explore the recent run of success enjoyed by drugmaker Eli Lilly and its boss, CEO Dave Ricks. Lilly was slow to appreciate the potential of the new generation of weight-loss drugs, known as GLP-1s. But under Ricks, the company has overtaken rival Novo Nordisk A/S (best known for Ozempic and Wegovy) by developing next generation drugs and cultivating a direct relationship with consumers.
