How Chicago connected 64,000 students to high-speed internet

Since the start of the pandemic, Chicago has provided about 64,000 public school students in need with high-speed internet access through its Chicago Connected initiative. It's now the largest K-12 broadband connectivity program in the US, and will expand eligibility over the next two years to reach as many as 228,000 students, as the city considers a permanent government-supported system.

While many think of the digital divide as a rural issue, city dwellers also face hurdles to internet access, such as financial, language and cultural barriers, writes Amy Yee. With new federal funding for expanding broadband access through President Joe Biden's $1 trillion infrastructure plan, other local governments can learn from Chicago.
