Inflation has been roiling American consumers for years. Lately, gas prices have been grabbing the headlines, but since January 2020, food prices have risen 32% on average, with coffee, cereal, eggs and beef climbing far higher. Over the past decade, steak and ground beef prices have just about doubled, becoming almost a luxury item. On this week’s podcast, hosts Max Chafkin and Stacey Vanek Smith talk to Extra Salt columnist Deena Shanker, who writes about beef’s changing economics in the latest issue of Businessweek.

Then they pivot to the big business topic of the week: artificial intelligence. Even as expectations soar and Anthropic gets ready to launch what may be the biggest initial public offering of all time, more worries are surfacing about the structural underpinning of the AI boom. Nervous investors are pulling their money out of CoreWeave and other AI, AI-adjacent and tech stocks and stuffing it back into US bonds, where (presumably) it will be safer. Sarah Frier, who covers Big Tech for Bloomberg News, joins to break down what’s causing these AI fears, as well as what we might expect from Anthropic going public.
