More than a science experiment

About 10 minutes south of the Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport, scientists are preparing to create tiny stars, right here on Earth, in hopes of powering the world.

Inside an unassuming office park, Pacific Fusion Corp. is assembling a pulser module, a tubelike device roughly the length of a city bus, studded with hundreds of phone-book-size capacitors that store electricity. The futuristic-looking mechanism, plus 155 more just like it, will be installed at the $1 billion demonstration site that Pacific Fusion just started building in Albuquerque, New Mexico. When the system is up and running in 2030, the capacitors will be charged with electricity and then discharged, creating a powerful magnetic field that will compress a pellet the size of a pencil eraser filled with deuterium and tritium, two hydrogen isotopes. This process should create conditions similar to those of the sun for a fraction of a second as the atoms fuse to form helium. In short, they’ll create energy — and perhaps prove in the process that fusion is more than just a very expensive science experiment.

Researchers have been studying fusion as a potential power source since the 1950s. With stars, immense gravity and extreme heat force small atoms to combine into larger ones, releasing energy; scientists have long imagined the same process someday fueling our homes and machines. But replicating the conditions within a star is pretty hard. Until recently, the energy needed to set off a fusion reaction was greater than the energy it produced.

Then, in late 2022, at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, east of San Francisco, researchers used the world’s biggest laser to deliver about 2.05 megajoules of energy to a target, triggering a fusion reaction that released 3.15 megajoules. The test made worldwide news, boosting excitement for the dozens of global companies that had been laboring to bring fusion systems to market. Until that breakthrough, there had always been skeptics and doubters, even a long-standing joke in the science community: “Fusion is 20 years away, and it always will be.” Now there’s growing confidence that fusion might be viable as a power source — and possibly at a cost that doesn’t put it out of reach.

“Demonstrating fusion is just a small step to building a commercial power plant,” says Greg Twinney, chief executive officer of Canada’s General Fusion Group Ltd., which operates a large-scale demo system outside Vancouver. “It’s been proven in labs. Now it has to be proven that it can be commercialized.”

The payoff would be huge: Fusion offers the potential of abundant clean power. Compared with fission, the nuclear process that generates energy by splitting large atoms, fusion is expected to produce much less waste and present lower radiation risk to workers. And if it works on a big enough scale, it would operate around the clock in any weather, unlike wind and solar. Investors have already bet more than $14 billion on the emerging technology, with a record $4.5 billion of that coming in the last year. Startups are piling in: The Fusion Industry Association, a trade group, is tracking more than 50 companies worldwide that are seeking to develop power plants based on all of this very complicated physics and engineering.

UK’s food price shocks

A string of shocks from El Niño, summer droughts and war in Iran will push UK food inflation above 6% next year, according to forecasts by the country’s food producers.

The Food and Drink Federation warned that food inflation will hit almost 4% by Christmas, more than double the current rate, before accelerating to a peak of 6.4% in July 2027. It would be the highest annual increase since early 2024 when grocery costs were still being affected by the energy shock from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine two years earlier.

The UK trade body for food and drink manufacturers said a £100 ($135) weekly shop in 2020 would cost almost £150 by next summer should prices rise as fast as it forecasts, intensifying cost-of-living pressures that are already top of Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s agenda. He has signaled that more help for households and businesses is on its way but is facing a deteriorating fiscal backdrop ahead of the autumn budget.
