Apple CEO John Ternus describes his “intelligent personal hub” approach.

When John Ternus kicked off his first keynote presentation as Apple Inc.’s new chief executive officer this month, he used the first few minutes to articulate his vision for the future of devices in the artificial intelligence era.

He asked viewers to imagine designing an ideal AI hub from scratch. Such a device would require an always-on internet connection, a decent-sized display, top-tier cameras and microphones, and great battery life. It would need to be easy to use and work with other hardware, software and services, Ternus said.

He wanted the audience to feel as though he was about to introduce a breakthrough device — something that would compete with the growing range of AI-centric gadgets. But his point was actually quite different...
