They are dominating markets, the economy, large parts of American culture and indeed our very lives. Now they’re coming for the arts, as it seems one of the big songs of the summer may have been written by artificial intelligence. This week on Everybody’s Business, hosts Max Chafkin and Stacey Vanek Smith look at the ways AI is rising. First up, inflation. They take a journey into Max’s latest (rather upsetting) personal computer purchase, which was more expensive than he expected. The reason? Robots. More specifically, the shortage of memory chips, which data centers and other high-tech sectors have been hoovering up. Next, Bloomberg reporter Ashley Carman talks about the rise of AI music, including accusations that one of the biggest hits of the summer, “Rubberz” by rapper Fenix Flexin, was written by robots. AI-generated music is becoming a multibillion-dollar force, and services like Suno let anybody generate a song about any topic in any style they want in seconds, and for free.
