Good morning. Spain’s World Cup win caps a tournament that packed stadiums and boosted FIFA’s coffers. The conflict between the US and Iran shows little sign of easing. And Florida is no longer a cheaper escape from New York. Listen to the day’s top stories.

Spain won the World Cup 1-0 in extra time against Lionel Messi’s Argentina. By most measures, it capped a successful tournament, drawing record crowds despite record ticket prices and FIFA revenues that surpassed expectations.
The final was also an economic boon for New York City, as well as for prediction markets. Despite the US team’s early exit, the focus has already shifted to 2030, with one of the financiers behind Mauricio Pochettino’s salary urging the coach to stay on.

Off the pitch, geopolitical tensions continue. The US carried out a ninth straight day of airstrikes on Iran to stop shipping attacks and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. If Donald Trump knows where he wants to take the war, he’s giving few public signals, saying only that Iran has been hit “very hard” as the US death toll rose to 17.

US gasoline prices climbed back over the $4-a-gallon mark on average at the pump but Brent crude fell back from its highest level since the first half of June as Iran said it received proposals from mediators. With global supply buffers worn thin, the risk of another price spike is growing.

Speaking of rising costs, for those looking to swap New York for Florida the math has changed. The Miami metropolitan area is now more expensive than greater New York City for the first time on record. Salaries largely aren’t keeping pace with costs, while the Sunshine State’s once-booming job market faces surging unemployment. The ultra-wealthy continue to put down roots in the area though, with Mark Zuckerberg and Ken Griffin among those expanding their footprints.

Further north, former Maine lawmaker Troy Jackson is on track to secure the Democratic Senate nomination, replacing progressive favorite Graham Platner who exited the race after sexual assault allegations. Jackson would take on Senator Susan Collins, a Republican, in a race considered crucial to Democrats taking control of the Senate.

Bankers and advisers are devising wrappers, repacks and more to turn private fund assets into more appealing products. Regulators fear this may mask underlying risks, triggering correlated downgrades and forced selling.
