This year hasn’t been great so far for gender equity — the pay gap has been growing. According to the most recent data from the US Census Bureau, women working full time earn about 81¢ for every dollar men earn. That’s down from 83¢ a year ago. (Let’s not talk about the difference between Elon Musk and Gwynne Shotwell at SpaceX.) But there’s one profession that saw major gains in pay equity: professional basketball. After a landmark negotiation, WNBA players saw their earnings skyrocket, including a groundbreaking revenue-sharing deal with the league and a minimum salary for players that more than quadrupled.

This week on the Everybody’s Business podcast, hosts Stacey Vanek Smith and Max Chafkin talk with Bloomberg Businessweek contributor Megan Greenwell about the meteoric rise of the Women’s National Basketball Association as it kicks off what promises to be its biggest season yet.

Plus, Puck fashion correspondent Lauren Sherman joins Max and Stacey to break down her latest scoop: Fast-fashion giant Shein has acquired direct-to-consumer pioneer Everlane for $100 million. What does an opaque e-commerce behemoth want with a brand that built its name on “radical transparency”? Lauren unpacks the corporate irony and offers sanity-saving shopping advice.
