Rising inflation, a flat job market, soaring fuel prices and collateral damage from President Donald Trump’s trade war have put affordability at the center of the US political conversation. A CNN poll published this month found 73% of Americans rate economic conditions poorly, with 61% saying they’ve modified their grocery store purchases as a result. Food prices were a big issue in New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s election campaign and directly tied to one of his signature policies: a plan to open city-owned grocery stores. Critics, including billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, attacked the idea as bound to fail. (“Imagine if every NYC supermarket were run like the Motor Vehicle Bureau,” Ackman wrote on social media last June.) But as novel as the idea may seem, you don’t have to use your imagination to picture what it will look like. This week on the Everybody’s Business podcast from Bloomberg Businessweek, Azalea Fresh Market Chief Executive Officer Paul Nair and General Manager Jada Marai discuss their popular city-backed grocery store in Atlanta. Plus, host Max Chafkin speaks with filmmaker Matt Zien about the line between artificial intelligence slop and AI art. Listen and subscribe on Apple, Spotify, iHeart and the Bloomberg Terminal.
