What Kind of Bull Market Is This?
On Monday’s Profit Panel, Alex Reid and Chris Pulver both raised their eyebrows at something odd:
This market keeps charging higher…
But the leaders aren’t who you’d expect.
Forget the Mag 7. Forget speculative tech.
It’s utilities, defense stocks, and industrials that are pushing the tape higher right now — names like Southern Company (SO), Constellation Energy (CEG), and Lockheed Martin (LMT). Not exactly your usual melt-up suspects.
Chris noted that industrials are the best-performing sector so far this year — up nearly 15% — thanks to names like RTX, Caterpillar, and GE Aerospace.
Even utilities, usually a snoozy, dividend-driven sector, are up over 10%. Meanwhile, healthcare is in the red, and consumer discretionary isn’t far behind.
As Alex put it, “Everything’s… weird.”
A “Healthy Bull” — or Something Else?
The team broke down a few possibilities:
| | • | | Sector rotation at work? Maybe. If leadership is broadening out, that’s healthy. |
| | • | | Or is it just another concentration bubble? Could be. Some sectors are being led by just 4–5 heavyweights. |
| | • | | Is this “risk-on” behavior? Not exactly. Utilities and defense aren’t typically seen as aggressive growth plays. |
| | • | | Are we heading for a pullback? Probably — but timing it is tricky. The VIX is historically low, and August is right around the corner. |
Alex and Chris both emphasized the importance of structure and patience in this environment. Stocks are making big moves, but many of them are already extended. They agreed: don’t chase. Wait for consolidations, flags, or a pullback before stepping in.
As our expert panel agreed: “You’re not going to catch every move. But structure gives you a reason to enter. Chasing highs doesn’t.”
