A quantum leap for a former Chicago steel mill

On the site of a long-shuttered steel mill in Chicago's South Side, developers are looking to build a $9 billion campus devoted to quantum computing. The proposal is part of an ambitious plan to put the Windy City at the forefront of a powerful but still theoretical technology that promises to make the internet unhackable.

But residents of the historically Black neighborhood have voiced concerns over the project. Even as developers propose a "quantum prairie" that embraces the native landscape, critics say the plans ignore environmental issues on the site — which bears the legacy of decades of industrial pollution.
