Japan tightens the circle: New export controls from Japan, spanning cutting-edge chips and quantum computer-related technology, are likely to sour trade with China, Beijing has warned. Around 110 Chinese companies and research institutions are on a list, alongside Iranian and North Korean entities, of organizations that would be subject to export oversight.

Germany rethinks military research: The dividing line between Germany's defense industry and public research institutions is now being questioned. Dating back to the Cold War, the policy is under attack but retains fierce defenders as well.

Apple's setback: The iPhone maker has scrapped work on advanced augmented-reality glasses, a product seen as a more comfortable and affordable consumer offering than the $3,499 Vision Pro mixed-reality goggles released in 2024.

Kakao Corp., South Korea's internet and entertainment giant, rose 9% on Monday after Yonhap News reported it will announce a partnership with OpenAI this week. OpenAI chief Sam Altman is visiting the country as part of a world tour.
