Tech Across the Globe

New Sony CEO: Sony is promoting CFO and President Hiroki Totoki to its top post, effective April. It's more continuity than change, as Totoki is already responsible for operations and strategy, and together with outgoing CEO Yoshida has pushed the company toward acquiring more content and entertainment rights.

UK scrutiny: Amazon and Microsoft's cloud computing services in the UK are under greater pressure from regulators after the Competition and Markets Authority found the companies dominate the sector with a combined 80% of the market.

US leads AI spending: AI apps are now a $2 billion business, with OpenAI's ChatGPT taking the lead in enticing users to open their wallets. American consumers contributed roughly half of all spending on AI apps, which were most popular with young and male users, a two-year study of the sector found.

Revalued

Skild AI, a startup building robotics software, is set to be valued at $4 billion — up from $1.5 billion last July — in a new $500 million funding round. SoftBank is in talks to lead the round. Amazon, Menlo Ventures and Sequoia Capital are among Skild's investors.

In today's Tech In Depth, Spencer Soper writes that the decision by Whole Food workers to join a labor union at a Philadelphia store is just the first step in a long road toward getting a contract with parent Amazon.com. The company hasn't reached an agreement with warehouse workers in Staten Island, New York, almost three years after they joined a union. For more tech coverage from Bloomberg, subscribe here.

This week in Q&AI

The release of a new open-source AI model from little known Chinese startup DeepSeek has sparked anxiety, and some hope, in the tech industry, Shirin Ghaffary writes in Q&AI. DeepSeek's ability to produce a model that rivals or out-performs US competitors, for a fraction of the cost, has some worried about US progress, but others believing the advancement may reduce the cost of AI and help it gain greater use.
