There are a number of reasons for investors to feel apprehensive right now. The US-Israel war with Iran has led to the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the worst oil shock ever, with parts of Asia facing fuel shortages and the global crisis deepening as every day passes. In the US, consumer sentiment is low, inflation is rising, and there’s change at the Federal Reserve amid uncertainty of Donald Trump’s trade war and what US courts have to say about it.

Why then, given all of this worrying news, is the stock market breaking records? This week on Everybody’s Business, Kyla Scanlon, author of In This Economy? How Money & Markets Really Work, joins hosts Max Chafkin and Stacey Vanek Smith to make sense of the disconnect.

They’re also joined on this episode by Bloomberg Businessweek Editor Brad Stone, who co-wrote a cover story about Amazon’s efforts to capitalize on the current moment. The company’s chief executive officer, Andy Jassy, cuts a less polarizing figure than founder Jeff Bezos, though in certain ways he’s executing the same playbook Bezos used.
