With school back in session, parents and activists in Washington, DC, are mobilizing to keep students safe during their commutes, as President Donald Trump expands the deployment of federal agents and the National Guard in the city. Trump's order to put armed troops inside Metro stations has raised concerns of exposing students — particularly those of color — to federal law enforcement as many rely on public transit. Immigrant advocates, meanwhile, worry that agents may exploit the school commute to target parents and children.

Some community members are organizing "walking school buses," while others have volunteered to keep watch near schools and transit hubs, Kriston Capps reports. Today on CityLabParents Mobilize to Protect School Commutes Amid Trump Deployment in DC
