When it comes to scanning for trades, there are plenty of tools out there promising an edge — speed, accuracy, fancy filters… Tech stocks are exciting — no question about it. They make headlines, they move fast and they can hand out some massive percentage gains. But when I’m trading butterflies or verticals, I don’t want excitement. I want predictability. I want calm. And that’s why I almost always stay away from tech. You’ve probably looked at a chart for something like Arista Networks (ANET), Nvidia (NVDA) or Broadcom (AVGO) and thought… This setup looks perfect. I’ve been there. The ranges look clean, the support and resistance levels line up, and the ATRs are tempting. But none of that matters when a single press release can blow the whole trade apart. This is the main problem. Tech — especially large-cap and AI-adjacent names — moves on news. Not just their own news, either. If the market hears a whisper about Nvidia, suddenly every chipmaker reacts. That’s fine if you’re swing trading with wide stops or if you’re playing momentum. But when I’m setting up a butterfly spread that relies on price staying within a defined range, news-driven volatility is the enemy. I don’t want to guess how the market will react to a product launch or a surprise upgrade. I want to know where the stock’s likely to close — and why.
