The dilemma of cooling Europe's historic sites

Also today: NFL teams dream of domed stadiums, and Mexico City restricts Airbnb rentals to curb 'gentrification.'

The Michaelerplatz in Vienna's city center is famed for its historic architecture, but the lack of shade can make for an unpleasant visit in the summer, when the cobblestone plaza turns into an urban heat island. Yet a plan to naturally cool the plaza by planting trees has drawn outrage from top architectural experts who say the city's proposal jeopardizes the center's status as a world cultural heritage site.

The standoff underscores a mounting challenge in balancing historical preservation and climate adaptation in a heritage-rich continent that's also the world's fastest-warming. Plans to add trees and other vegetation to historic sites have also prompted hesitation in Rome and Paris, Sonja Wind reports. Today on CityLab: Europe's Urban Dilemma: Saving the Past From a Warming Future
