On a scorching summer day in Europe, few activities are more tempting than taking a dip in a river — at least in some cities. For much of the last century, industrial pollution and sewage overflow due to aging systems have left urban waterways largely unswimmable. But decades of cleanup efforts in cities like Copenhagen in Denmark and Basel in Switzerland have renewed interest in outdoor plunges. In other places where the water quality is more questionable — think the Thames in London — urban swimmers tread carefully, scoping out the cleanest corners of the river and paying attention to real-time sewage data.
