On Monday, the US Supreme Court is weighing two cases challenging affirmative action. Over decades the court has chipped away at such policies aimed at supporting diversity, but should it completely do away with affirmative action, the most elite institutions in the US will almost certainly become Whiter — in a country where social mobility for some racial and ethnic groups is already a challenge. We look at nine states that currently ban the practice in public schools, which provide a preview — and warning — for the rest of the country.
