Tech Across the Globe

China jabs back: Unlike Mexico and Canada, China got saddled with tariffs from the incoming Trump administration and Beijing issued a response. It was carefully calibrated to signal displeasure without rocking the boat — exemplified by China setting its regulatory sights on Google, a company whose services have been absent from the country since 2010.

Google's cloudy results: Sales at Alphabet's Google Cloud unit jumped 30% in the fourth quarter, but that wasn't enough for investors looking for accelerating growth. The results led to an 8% drop in the share price in late trading. The unit is No. 3 in the US behind Amazon Web Services and Microsoft.

Spotify's success: The Swedish company's strategy of expanding beyond music to podcasts, audiobooks and video paid off as it posted another quarter of subscriber growth that was better than expected and recorded its first-ever annual profit.

Revalued

China's ecommerce players, from Alibaba to JD.com, tumbled in Wednesday trading after the US Postal Service announced it's halting the receipt of packages from mainland China and Hong Kong. It was the latest in a deluge of measures by Washington against its biggest economic rival.

All this at a time that its share price is going in exactly the opposite direction. Vlad Savov delves into the abundant optimism surrounding the upcoming Switch 2 console and how investors are shrugging off anything before its release.
