Here's how NOT to do it:
- Search for your target keyword on Google
- See where your site shows up
Why does that method suck?
Because you're likely seeing personalised results. Google will be showing you different search results based on your location and previous search/browsing history.
So the likelihood is that your site will be ranking higher for you than the rest of the world.
To make it slightly more of a fair test you can search using 'incognito' or private browsing mode, but this is still going to skew your results to your location.
The most fair test of all is to use a rank tracking tool like SEMrush. SEMrush is the one that we use internally and for our clients here at EN, and it allows you to not only track daily rankings for your target keywords but it'll also show you rankings you have for phrases you didn't know you were showing up for.
We've negotiated a free 14-day PRO test drive here. This is great for doing competitor research and spotting those 'surprise' rankings you didn't know you had!
Hope it's useful
