Perrier is one of the world's best-known mineral waters, found in boardrooms and high-end restaurants across the world.

But traces of fecal matter and pesticides in the water where Perrier is sourced have put the billion-dollar brand under scrutiny. There's no suggestion that Perrier is unsafe — Nestlé Waters France reaffirmed that its safety and quality have always been guaranteed. But its challenges come as the broader $300 billion global water business is also facing a more fundamental question: Does it make ecological sense to transport millions of bottles across the globe instead of sourcing water locally?
