I was looking over the WBTC website again recently, taking a look at the WBTC on Tron page and I noticed that 99.9% of all WBTC on Tron was issued by a single WBTC merchant. The weird thing is that this merchant is listed as 'Unknown,' which seemed strange to me because I was under the impression that WBTC would know who the DAO had given minting keys to. The address in question, TWtqXzfx8vWf7gnhM1HKKHo7zvwRA65NdQ, is labeled on Tronscan as Alameda Research, the ill-fated embezzlement operation owned by Sam Bankman-Fried. It has also been previously reported that Alameda Research was responsible for these mints. What is strange is that despite listing it as 'unknown,' if you hit the orange 'GET WBTC' button on the website, it still redirects you to Alameda Research's website, which, of course, is defunct. Now, I know what you're thinking; obviously, the 'WBTC DAO' held a vote and eliminated Alameda Research as a merchant, and that's why it's now listed as unknown. There's reason to believe this as if you head to the WBTC on Ethereum page, you'll see that Alameda Research is now listed as 'Alameda (Removed).' Strangely, Wyre and Three Arrows Capital are not listed as removed, despite their failure. |
