Casual hang-outs are so last year

Also today: Valencia tightens vacation rental rules, and rideshare apps strike NYC deal to scale back driver lockouts.

Casual bar-hopping is out; organized experiences are in. Whether it's trivia night or silent discos, restaurants and bars are increasingly hosting events to draw in more customers, in addition to being spaces for people to casually hang out.

Amid busy schedules and factors like remote work and online dating fatigue, people are being more intentional with how they spend their free time. Some seek out activities that build community; others simply want to do more than drink. Such a shift in demand is part of a booming "experience economy," Teresa Xie reports. Today on CityLab: Going Out?
