After being kept at bay for more than 50 years, France's far-right National Rally is set for a historic triumph in Sunday's legislative runoff—even if it falls short of an absolute majority. For the architect of the party's ascent, laying the groundwork for victory has come at a price.

Marine Le Pen's transition from fringe to frontrunner has much to do with her willingness to renounce her political heritage—including the positions of her father, whose overt racism and divisive rhetoric ultimately condemned him to political oblivion. But in seeking to "de-demonize" her brand and reassure business about her economic policies, she now risks losing her radical touch—and the voters clamoring for it.
