Key Levels and 2 Likely, Near-Term Ways This Market Plays Out for FOMC Today’s the day the Federal Open Market Committee releases the minutes from its last meeting, followed by comments from Chair Jerome Powell.   This of course happens every six weeks and volatility can really ramp up, especially in this environment with a market dying to hear any hints about future interest rate cuts… While traders and investors want some dovish reassurance — otherwise, there will be more downside — the market reaction is the only thing that matters.  Powell knows the market wants a dovish stance, and he doesn’t want to pour cold water on the notion that we could see a rate cut(s) this year.  Every word he says could make a difference, though, I don’t expect much volatility until he starts speaking — Europe is closed for holiday and institutional traders likely won’t make any big bets aside from day trades ahead of time. There are two likely outcomes for the market in the near term…  Either we are falling to the 100-day moving average (white line), or heading up to the 50-day MA (the blue line). Blue chips are strong in comparison to the S&P 500 (SPY). Notice the green relative strength piling up (bottom right corner) of my ProTrader Dashboard. Keep a close eye on the $500 level for the SPY. So far, it’s doing a darn good job of holding. And if it doesn’t break down today, it will likely move higher and try testing above current levels.  That’s all for now — be sure and watch out for Powell today and don’t get yourself in trouble!
