The electric car era is transforming economies around the world — and creating new flashpoints, as communities vie for jobs, investment and innovation.

The stakes are enormous: BloombergNEF forecasts the cumulative value of all forms of EV sales will hit $8.8 trillion by 2030 and $57 trillion by 2050. "It's all up for grabs," said Colin McKerracher, head of transport and automotive analysis at BNEF. "And nobody wants to be left behind."
