Shell, Europe's biggest oil company, set out to solve one of the most pressing problems with carbon offsets: Most don't deliver the environmental benefits they promise. With deep pockets and a century of engineering expertise, Shell thought it could do better. What it learned from its efforts turned out to be an even more damning indictment of one of the corporate world's favorite "climate solutions."
