Inspired by the throngs of young protesters who took part in the 2020 summer of racial justice demonstrations, a new young adult novel explores how teenagers experience unwanted changes in their community. There Goes the Neighborhood, by LA-based author Jade Adia, is a coming-of-age story about a group of quirky Black and brown teens who try to stop their South LA neighborhood from gentrifying by creating a fake gang. All goes as planned — until that nonexistent gang is accused of murder. In a conversation with Linda Poon, Adia talks about how her own upbringing in South LA inspired her to write this book, and why it's important to put young adults "on the front lines" of complex conversations about gentrification, inequity and resilience.
