San Francisco replaces its ousted DA

The mayor of San Francisco has appointed Brooke Jenkins to replace former district attorney Chesa Boudin, who was recalled last month amid a broader backlash against progressive prosecutors in the US. Jenkins, a former prosecutor in the DA's office, has been critical of Boudin for failing to deter crime and hold offenders accountable. In his stead, she vowed to crack down on hate crimes and strengthen the relationship between the DA's office and the police.

Jenkins's appointment comes as residents voice discontent with the city's pandemic recovery and raise concerns about public safety. It signals a tougher approach on crime from Mayor London Breed, who said she chose Jenkins with the goal of enacting greater accountability measures without abandoning reform, writes Sarah Holder.
